The B-List Rick and Morty

Let's face it: a lot of hit animated shows get a comic book version. This one is pretty much par for the course. It's sort of like the TV show. Just so long as you don't look or think too deeply.

Rick and Morty - the show - is currently my absolute favorite thing on TV. It's smart, it deals almost effortlessly with some of the great "absolutes" of literary fiction, and it's rolling in the aisles funny.

This book... is the "Uncle Steve" version of Rick and Morty (you'll get that reference if you've seen season two, episode four of the show). The deeper layers of meaning aren't quite there, and when this book does try to put them in, to be honest it just feels like they're painting by numbers. Zac Gorman, who gets the writing credits on this one, isn't quite up to the standard of the people who did the writing for the show. As a result, this whole thing has a definite "B" feel to it.

Now, don't get me wrong: A "B" isn't bad. This book made me laugh. Often. If you expect no more from it than that, I think you'll enjoy it. Just don't let it infest your brain, okay?

It is a definite notch down from what we get on TV.

Just buy this book, okay? Well, if you're a Rick and Morty fan, which I'm assuming you are. I assume everyone is. Sometimes I assume wrong, but then I pretend like you are anyway, so it all works out. The characters are very true to the show, and stuff happens that is pretty amusing and stuff.

For those who might be fans of Rick and Morty and want to buy this, PLEASE keep in mind that the Rick and Morty TV universe is different than the comics' Rick and Morty (think Marvel's Cinematic Universe and Marvel's Comic Universe.)

Due to the fact comics only have so many pages, the story feels rushed at times. Some of the jokes fall flat just due to the fact you can't hear Rick's sarcastic and constantly bored voice or Morty's naive unsure voice.

The art style(s) all are pleasing to my eyes, but please keep in mind that it changes often. Some people may find this jarring or find that it may ruin the feel.

Overall, if you're a fan and just want something to hold you over til season 3 debut in December you should buy it. Just keep your mind open and don't expect all the jokes to hit like they do in the show.

Richard. Stop that!

Who says a business book can't be entertaining? Whether you are an entrepreneur trying to get your business off the ground, an executive in a business that needs a boost or a worker bee looking to make work more fun, this book is for you.

Richard Branson is the Leonardo da Vinci of business. His unquenchable curiosity combined with contagious extroversion is the alchemy behind the 400+ successful businesses he has created. This book, consisting of 76 short essays and articles, documents the lessons he has learned. Numerous examples, most drawn from real-life experiences with people at his Virgin Group companies, are a roadmap for others in business to turbocharge their own success.

Branson's "Like a Virgin" reveals just what a huge gap exists in modern business school curriculum. Do they teach these things like this?

- A CEO needs "a certain generosity of spirit."
- "You have to protect your people."
- "You must be fearless."
- "Business favors people who, when they see a problem or injustice, try to do something about it."
- "Leaders have empathy ... for people who are affected by the business's operations."
- Show generous praise for employees caught doing something right: amp it up!
- Think big. Build small.
- "The sky is no longer the limit."
- Be very tolerant of mistakes. Move on. Give employees second chances (he did so even with a thief!)

Business should be fun. Employees are co-entrepreneurs and enthusiastic brand ambassadors. Challenge. Celebrate. Keep splitting the company into smaller businesses as it grows to avoid bureaucracy and empower employees.

There is no identifiable progression of thought to the sequence of these articles. Although each is excellent in its own right, it is difficult to identify the article's subject from the table of contents. The articles are not numbered making it a bit troublesome to reference any particlar one or to build a concordance (cross-reference) to include in, say, an Amazon review. If it were possible to deduct a half-star from the rating, this would be the reason to do so.

Some articles are thoughtful essays and others are extended responses to questions he has received from people via email and social media. Topics include how to plan a startup to maximize chances for success; how to write a compelling business plan; perfecting your pitch; raising money; dealing with customer complaints; motivating employees; dealing with partners; failure; the art of delegation; when to step aside; environmental stewardship; the war on drugs; earning customer trust; and marketing, sales and advertising.

Branson's writing style is conversational, succinct, personal and tempered by real world situations involving employees, partners, vendors and customers. His charisma seeps out of the page. His advice is very practical and for the most part consists of ideas that anyone can immediately put into practice with some modification for circumstances.

Imagine, a business book that is a "page turner." Enjoy! Five stars!

Not too impressed

I read all the other Richard Branson books and this I think is the weakest of his books. I had high hopes for this book, but when I started reading it just did not live up to my expectations. It feels very light from a content perspective and is too high level (not sure about the best term to describe it) - in that regards the book title is very misleading. The book does not have a good flow and so it is more difficult (and less relaxing) to read.

If you have read his other books, this one is the one to skip. While the advice in this book is solid, it's repetitive after having read the other books. And while the other books had a great connection and good flow, these "short stories" do not.

Richard Branson seems like a really nice guy and his approach to business and life are simply awesome. So, buy his other books and skip this one. It is much more fun to enjoy his stories that way.

Straight Forward Advice

I like Richard Branson’s style when it comes to business and the way he has written this book.
One of his principles is keep it simple and this is reflected how he has put this book together.
The extensive series of short chapters are succinctly written in plain easy to understand language without flowery waffle and unnecessary embellishment. The chapters are bite sized and you have read and digested his points long before you mind has the chance to drift off onto something else.
His emphasis on how the Virgin business's have been and continue to be successful and the reasons why many have not been successful is enlightening. The vast majority of business could learn more than a lesson or two on how to manage, engage with and empower their staff to create a culture where people want be part of a thriving business and will put in that discretionary effort which delivers such fabulous results. This is one of the key messages for me.
This is essential reading for anyone who wants to pick up the basic principles. Or indeed for so called experienced competent managers who want or need to reflect on their own performance and either improve or at the very least polish their act - there is something in this book for everyone.

A Must Have!

A Must Have! Although this is a children book, I highly recommend it for ALL ages. It left me in such awe, the way it gracefully teaches you the attributes of Allah (SWT). The message is simple yet done in the most beautiful and creative ways. The illustration makes a big impact and goes hand in hand with this meaningful book! I loved pursuing the pages with my children and finding the hidden shahada. Thank you for doing this and looking forward to many more books from you both, in sha'Allah!

A subject that needs exploration, but several things about this book bother me.

To keep this review focused, I'll concentrate on one thing. What bothers me most about this book is the section titled, "Can a pet return as a human?"

Atwater claims that animal souls cannot match the higher "vibrational energy frequency range" of a human. She then quotes "the Yogic view": 'According to this theory, sometimes an animal soul that prematurely becomes a human (before it has learned enough lessons to be truly evolved) reincarnates as a person that exhibits excessive "beast like" qualities.'

Atwater does not elaborate on what "beast like" means, but I think it's pretty obvious what that term would evoke in most people's minds: brutal would be a suitable synonym. This is especially strange considering that this section follows the section on "God animals".

I'll tell you what "beast"-like really means in my experience: loving creatures that just want to live their lives as honestly as possible. The animals that have contacted me in spirit have all talked about the same thing: love. The happiest beings I have ever known have been animals. None of that sounds like lower vibrational energy or brutal qualities to me.

I believe that we will never truly understand life or our roles in it until we abandon the ladder-like metaphor of spiritual evolution that places humans above all else. That metaphor not only confuses our view of life, it has contributed to uncountable suffering for animals everywhere.

Fantastic book for all pet owners

After my 13 year cat companion transitioned recently I found Brent Atwater's work and websites. I ordered her book "Animal Reincarnation" and as I read, my grief began melting away, replaced with comfort and hope. In my opinion reincarnation is a fact and there is much reputable information and evidence to support the concept of human reincarnation. However I didn't give much thought to animal reincarnation until this book. If this concept seems strange, just open your heart and mind to the possibility. Brent's messages and words ring with sincerity and resonate as truth to me. Her book is filled with intuitive wisdom and written in a very grounded manner. It does answer just about any question you could think of on this subject. Based on "Animal Reincarnation" it is clear that when our pets pass on, they only shed their physical bodies (just as in human death) and move into a different state of being. They are fine! And they are aware. And they may even return to be with you. My only regret is not finding this book before my pet transitioned. Brent is divinely gifted and is providing an incredibly valuable service through her work.

I have had animals around me all of my life, mainly cats whom I have adored. 5 years ago I came across a puppy who turned my world upside down. I named him Joey and he lived for 4 short years, dying from a sudden massive spread of cancer after struggling with pancreatitis intermittently for 2 years. He was the joy of my life - and I 'knew' him, understood his soul, his thoughts and his feelings. The very day he died, my world collided with grief and my first thought was 'how do I connect with his soul?' and 'can I bring his soul back into another animal?' I had always believed in reincarnation for humans, so why would it be different for animals - reincarnation is about souls and their energy.
The search led me to Brent Atwater's websites, books, blogs and support groups. When I read some of the posts in the group, it was like a light 'came on' and I realised I was not alone in my thoughts and prayers.
I ordered the paperback the very next day and waited about a week for it to arrive. I still prefer paper back as I can carry it around with me and read it wherever I go. I read the book from cover to cover at least three times, each time gaining more knowledge and understanding. It filled me with hope initially, but then the hope changed to 'knowing'. I have soul mates in two of my cats that have been with me in one form or another since 1983. My boy Joey is returning to me in the next few weeks.
No one can know everything about what happens in transition, rebirth or death - but Brent knows and 'feels' as much as a soul can. She has too many testimonials to mention, myself being one, and I share her mission in life to bring about more awareness that reincarnation is a beautiful and simple part of God's plan.
Anyone who is suffering grief and loss and has any questions - should read this book. After this book I then bought [[ASIN:1463578245 "I'm Home!" a Dog's Never Ending Love Story: Animals Afterlife, Pets Soul Contracts, Animal Reincarnation, Animal Communication, Animals Spirits and Pet Reincarnation], again in paperback - these are stories from real people who have experienced the return of their pets and is too beautiful for words. Now I have both on Kindle as well. Beautiful books, beautiful soul is Brent Atwater and what she explains, explores and writes about is beautiful.

About the Author
George F. Cole is Professor Emeritus of Political Science at the University of Connecticut. He has been recognized for outstanding teaching and research and in 1995 was named a Fellow of the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences. A specialist in the administration of criminal justice, he has published extensively on such topics as prosecution, courts, and corrections. He developed and directed the graduate corrections program at the University of Connecticut and was a Fellow at the National Institute of Justice (1988). Among his other accomplishments, he has been granted two awards under the Fulbright-Hays Program to conduct criminal justice research in England and the former Yugoslavia. He is co-author of several Wadsworth criminal justice titles, including THE AMERICAN SYSTEM OF CRIMINAL JUSTICE, 14th Edition (with Christopher Smith and Christina DeJong); AMERICAN CORRECTIONS, 11th Edition (with Todd Clear and Michael Reisig); AMERICAN CORRECTIONS IN BRIEF, 3rd Edition (with Todd Clear, Michael Reisig, and Carolyn Petrosino); and THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM: POLITICS AND POLICIES, 10th Edition (with Marc Gertz).

Christopher E. Smith is Professor of Criminal Justice at Michigan State University. Trained as a lawyer and social scientist, he is the author of twenty books and more than ninety scholarly articles on law, courts, and criminal justice policy. His other books with Wadsworth include CRIMINAL JUSTICE IN AMERICA, Seventh Edition (with George Cole) CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHTS: MYTHS AND REALITIES, and CRIMINAL PROCEDURE. He is also the co-author, with George Cole and Christina DeJong, of THE AMERICAN SYSTEM OF CRIMINAL JUSTICE, Thirteenth Edition.

"Must-have" if you're interested in law or law school bound...Superb reference and learning book (there is also a Study Guide -- harder to find); you'll keep this book for years of use! If you take a Criminal Justice course, this is the text you should hope the prof demands. It is truly the best out there. Yes, it's pricy - but worth every dollar.

Best Intro Book on the Market

As an instructor of criminal justice, I can say that this is one of the easiest and most user-friendly textbooks on the market. It's colorful and friendly to the eye, not simply boring text. Introductory text content is fairly uniform across the textbook market, but presentation is everything and can mean the difference between a bored student and a student eager to learn. There is a reason this book has so many editions. Pick up a copy and find out why.
