Problem structuring methods (PSMs) are now widely accepted within Operational Research and the systems movement, and have generated an impressive record of high-profile applications. This new edition provides easier access to PSMs. Each of five methods is presented from both a theoretical and a practical perspective. The justification for each approach is explained, and an illustration of applying each method is given in a practical case study. Excellent for those who want to use specific tools with deep knowledge, even though is very easy to understand. This is the result of 30 years of research.

Largely unreadable.

Purchased and read this book for an academic course. Perhaps the most difficult book I've ever had to read. With the exception of a few chapters the material is overcomplicated and a struggle to decipher. Personally, I don't have time to sift through the convolutions of this writing style. I almost think the authors/editors produced this book to drum up consulting business for themselves. After I struggled through a chapter on a key concept and barely understood it, I would simply Google it, find other sources, and realize that it was really a fairly simple concept to learn. It's too bad because this should be an excellent handbook of PSMs. The editors have assembled a useful collection of tools and techniques, and the format (a chapter on the concept followed by a chapter showing a real world practical application of the concept) appears to be designed to be highly pedagogical. This might be ok as a supporting reference but don't make it your primary text on problem structuring methods.
