A fantastic book for anyone interested in practical street combat self-defense.
By Joseph J. Truncale
The authors of this book approach the subject of self-defense in a unique and interesting way. Though their back-grounds are similar, each specialized in different areas. Loren has wide experience in karate and police tactics. Mark's back-ground is in judo, jujitsu and wrestling. What they have in common is their practical police experience and a desire to focus on countering street attacks.
The 12 chapters in this fully illustrated book cover a multitude of approaches to various street attack situations. The introduction explains the author's experiences and their own specialties. The first chapter gives information on the wrestling point of view. The second chapter shows numerous defenses against the overhand right punch. The third chapter demonstrates how to counter a tackle type of attack. The fourth chapter reviews defenses against headlocks. The fifth chapter covers defenses against various types of bear hugs. The six chapter shows how to fight in tight spaces. The seventh chapter is about how to counter the collar/lapel grab. The eighth chapter deals with how to handle more than one attacker. Chapter nine shows some interesting self-defense counters against a baseball bat attack. Chapter ten explains how to counter a person who has a gun pointed at you. Chapter eleven deals with car jacking situations. The final chapter deals with edged weapon attack counters.
It is important to keep in mind that one has to actually practice the techniques shown in this book in order to get the most benefit from the material. A book can only point the way, but the reader must do the work.
In conclusion, this is a book that will be of interest to anyone who is interested practical and effective street combat techniques.

Meh Not great
By Monkingdale
For a book titled 'Total Defense' the 'total' nature of it is somewhat lacking. It's light on pages, and principles that can be applied and it only covers a minute of the sort of concepts that are required to be a 'system'. Most of the gun defenses shown are ludicrous to the extreme, involving largely pitting strength against strength in some horrendous positions. The wrestling portions of the book show some fantastic locks and are well worth the read, but the concept of gouging and slapping and kicking in a couple of pressure points really doesn't justify the price tag.
All in all it's an average book and a little knowledge can be a dangerous thing, but I'd be more inclined to look at Krav Maga for knife and gun defenses than this, as they are less strength dependent. This book is at its weakest when it comes to gun form the rear defenses where I'm basically 100% sure you're going to get killed if you try the ones demonstrated here in the real.

Great concept, great book.
By Wim Demeere
This book has a great concept: two authors (who've been there and done that) show you their responses to some common attacks you see on the street. As both men have different fighting styles and preferences, the reader gets more varied information than if it came from just one style or author. As always with Loren, his writing is no-nonsense and tries to give the reader information that works right away.
I enjoyed reading the book and highly recommend it, especially for MMA fighters who are looking to expand their skills into the realities of self defense.
