Accessible and Challenging

This is the first Timothy Keller book I bought, after it was recommended in my Bible Study. I bought it in the hopes of being guided to clear up some of the accumulated "dirt" in my life, especially the sorts of things you stop noticing. In this, I was not disappointed.

The early chapters focus on the "usual" suspects such as Romantic Love, Money, Success. Later in the book, Keller delves even deeper into the idols that our society accumulates and which we buy into without even realising it. If the book starts challenging, these chapters really make you think, especially how each of us, and the church, fits into our broader society.

There are two things which I found particularly helpful about this book. The first is how it invites you to question your emotions - what makes you afraid, what makes you relieved, what stresses you? Keller offers simple, straightforward clues to spot the hidden idols in your life, which really help.

The second is how he links each chapter to a biblical character. My husband also read the book and he commented that we don't realise just how flawed many biblical characters are. We talk about how flawed the characters in the Bible are, but we often only focus on the surface phenomenon that make the character flawed. What we miss is the deep idols that many of them allowed into their lives, which are much easier to miss when we read the Bible.

I would highly recommend this book to any Christian. It is easy to read while being very challenging. It's also the kind of book you can get a lot of mileage out of - I personally intend to re-read it every so often to remind myself off that easy-to-ignore "dirt".

Essential reading. Keller sketches the subtle yet powerful sin of idolatry. Writing late in the 1st century the Apostle John could say "keep yourselves from idols". I judge, Keller expands just what John meant.

Very helpful for believers and skeptics

Tim Keller as usual displays tremendous insight into the human condition as well as the Western (specifically US) context. Those who are Christian and non-Christian will benefit greatly from the insights this book provides. Keller doesn't just leave you hanging with lofty concepts but also gives plenty of cross-cultural examples that make very clear the point that the human heart tends to bow down to anything other than the true God and that those other things always come up short of the fulfillment we all deeply desire.

It explains important topics including Griffith theory of brittle crack propagation and its Irwin and Orowan modification, calculation of theoretical cohesive strength of materials through an atomic model and analytical determination of crack tip stress field. This book covers MATLAB programs for calculating fatigue life under variable amplitude cyclic loading. The experimental measurements of fracture toughness parameters KIC, JIC and crack opening displacement (COD) are provided in the last chapter.

About the Author
Surjya Kumar Maiti is a Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay. He has more than thirty-five years of teaching and research experience and has published nearly 100 papers in national and international journals. He received his PhD from the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay, and worked as postdoctoral assistant at the University of Cambridge for two years (1981-1983). He has taught courses on solid mechanics, strength of materials, stress analysis and pressure vessel design at both the undergraduate and postgraduate levels. His areas of research include fracture mechanics, finite element and boundary element methods, structural health monitoring and stress corrosion cracking.

Used in MBA program

Unfortunately I gave this textbook a rather low rating because I thought it was one of those books that was pretty much "common sense". There are times that you realize that you "knew" the concept but didn't know how to put it into words. While the book might be good review of some concepts, I am not sure it is worth the price of ~$80-$100.

High quality multi-author contribution

As any serious student who buys advanced science texts knows, edited books with many authors are almost always dismal. Cheetham & Day's book is a rare exception. If you seek a solid state chemistry text, you still can't find anything that is fully satisfactory. An authoritative book that has both the depth and breadth necessary to fill that role still doesn't exist, but this book is one of a couple that are worth buying in the meantime.
