good refresher/DOT reference

This is a well organized and indexed fire science text which is a useful reference for anyone who works with hazardous materials on a daily basis. It explains DOT regulations and how the regs are actually related to the chemistry of the materials. It explains the chemistry behind proper transport, handling, and storage of most major commodity chemicals and offers guidlines for emergency planning and response. The author does a good job of introducing/reviewing the concepts of chemistry with a clear focus on reactions which can lead to disaster. Two flaws: the writing is repetative, at times you can sense that the author/editiors were a bit tired of the text or in a hurry to get it to the press. The illustrations are O.K. but the black and white photos are AWFUL. Mr. Meyer, if you read this, go back and re-do all the photos for the next edition. I work at a RCRA TSDF and have found the text very useful for myself and our new employees who have studied chemistry but do not have a firm grasp of DOT and fire safety.

Good, could be better

I took a graduate level class with this as the textbook. It is a great reference and does a good job explaining regulations. The problems and the examples need to be more clear. I guess what I'm saying is the complex problems, such as oxidation-reduction reactions, are explained too briefly. Other than that, I enjoyed using the book for the class.

A Blandings novel

Unlike olives, Psmith is not an acquired taste!

If you own 10 Wodehouse books, this should be one of them. For years I have been a huge fan of the farcical Bertie & Jeeves stories. This book also throws some romance and a touch of mystery into the brew. Be careful that you are not in public or that you are not in the middle of having a drink when you reach page 198, because I am warning you - you will erupt into a fit of freakish laughter which probably won't subside for another 5 or 10 minutes, with intermittent relapses thereafter.
The eccentric and congenially self-absorbed Wodehousian hero of this novel is Psmith - pronounced with a silent P as in Ptarmigan (he finds that his birth name, Smith, is just too boring). Although he holds a membership to London's six most exclusive clubs and never a wrinkle or misplaced crease did find its way into his impeccable attire, he finds himself in dire financial straits. To make it worse, while lounging in the smoking-room window of the Drones Club, he instantly falls in love with a passing young dainty - but he has no idea how to introduce himself into her society.
Yet there might be a solution to his problems through the ad for work-wanted that he recently placed in the Morning Globe. In the caption he expresses the sentiment that he will take on any job whatever (including assassinating Aunts) except for anything relating to fish. You have a problem? "Leave it to Psmith!"
He ends up impersonating a well-known Canadian poet in order to introduce himself onto the guest list at beloved Blandings Castle, presided over by the eminent Lord Emsworth. While there he must steal a diamond necklace from under the tireless eye of The Efficient One - Emsworth's flower-pot-wielding secretary Baxter. Enjoy!

The best of the Psmith series

"Leave it to Psmith" concludes the evolution of the Psmith character, from Wodehouse's earliest style of writing with the "Schools" genre, to a comic character whose dialogue keeps the reader entertained throughout. This story sees Psmith enter into Blandings Castle, and though Lord Emsworth is not the dominant character he later becomes, flashes of brilliance are visible in his appearances (and in those of Lady Constance, who plays an important role in this book).
"Leave it to Psmith" is packed full of witty dialogue, readily suited to Psmith's character, and the traditional Wodehouse farce for the plot (misunderstandings, a stolen necklace, and so forth). The ending is predictable, of course, but this is hardly the point. It is the use of language that makes this such an enjoyable tale. Wodehouse connoisseurs all have their own favourite phrases, or particular sections of books that strike them as humorous from the prolific collection of Wodehouse's works. Suffice to say, several of my personal favourite sections appear in this book - Psmith at the employment agency, or describing his career as a fishmonger spring to mind. Those who enjoy the Blandings or Jeeves and Wooster series would do well to read this book.

The First Potty Doings at Blandings Castle

Leave It to Psmith (pronounced "Smith") is the first P.G. Wodehouse novel about Blandings Castle and its inmates, Clarence, ninth earl of Emsworth, his daunting sister, Lady Constance Keeble and Beach, the butler. Fans of later Blandings Castle tales will be a little puzzled by this one. Clarence is obsessed with flowers and gardening rather than pigs. The Empress of Blandings is nowhere in sight. And the main plot catalyst is Psmith, that remarkable public school character from the early Wodehouse novels, rather than Galahad Threepwood or Uncle Fred.

Although this is not the best of the Blandings Castle tales, it has one of the best plots and does an effective job of introducing the ongoing characters and jokes. The interrelationships of the characters in the past and present are remarkable for their complexity and present lots of deja vu scenes.

Psmith and Clarence are two of Wodehouse's finest creations and the central joy of this book is found in their extended interactions.

As usual, love and money are at the bottom of the plot. Psmith cannot bear to be in the fish business any longer and advertises that he will do anything -- even commit a crime -- to get a change of pace. Clarence's son, Freddie Threepwood, contacts Psmith and asks him to help with an inside-the-family theft of his aunt's necklace. Although his uncle is rolling in the stuff, Lady Constance keeps him on a short leash. Freddie's uncle will give her another necklace like the one that's "stolen" and use the money to help Freddie and his uncle's step-daughter Phyllis. Freddie needs the money to attract a bride and Phyllis needs to help her new husband get a start on life.

Like the other Blandings Castle stories, the castle is full of imposters. Psmith himself is posing as a poet, but is constantly being unmasked by those who choose to keep his secret for a time.

Complications come when Psmith finds himself falling in love with a young woman whom he spies outside the Drones Club needing an umbrella. The young woman turns out to be on her way to Blandings Castle as well. It also turns out that Freddie has been proposing to her, but hasn't worn her down yet. Who will win the fair maiden?

The book has some of the funniest scenes in it that you can imagine involving flower pots. It's an inspired beginning to the many jokes that follow in later books about potty people residing at Blandings Castle.

This is an excellent collection of articles describing people, firms, and nations that succeeded in modern capitlism. Looking a the four most successful economies of the past two centuries: England, US, Germany, and Japan- Prof. McCraw's expertly edited and coherent collection of articles gives the reader a flavor of what made for great success in the capitalist economy. Each country has three articles: a firm, an entrepenure, and the country itself for a total of 12 articles each written by true experts. McCraw's understanding of capitlism is somewhat skewed toward the modern, however on the whole the book is extremely balanced. Of partiuclar note, is Prof. David Moss's article on the Deutch Bank which dicusses the succcess, failures, rewards, and dark side of capitalism.

A Good Survey of Protestantism and Society.

"Reformation and Society" begins as a study of the leaders and the reformation movements in countries like Germany, Italy, France, the Netherlands, Scotland, and Britain to name a few.The Hussites, Thomas Cromwell, Stephen Gardiner, and William Tyndale are some of the notable sceptics of the papacy. Of course A.G. Dickens devotes more time to covering the better known trio of Luther, Zwingli, and Calvin.

The book examines some of the causes of the Reformation and the importance of universities and the printing press in fueling the reformation.

A look at the societies of Luther's Germany and other countries involved in varying degrees to the movement.

The influence that Thomas Wyttenbach had on Zwingli was interesting as was the failed attempt by Philip of Hesse to reconcile Luther and Zwingli. While the leaders of the Reformation had a common opponent in the Catholic church, their views were anything but universal.

The author descibed the different beliefs of various sects of Anabaptism and their suffering at the hands of both Catholics and Protestants.

"Reformation and Society" was a useful read on the Reformation and it's effects on a number of countries and societies. The squabbles over different viewpoints such as the view of communion in relation to Christ's physical body. Various views on spiritualism were also examined.
Overall an educational book well worth reading.

A classic, secular recounting of events in 16th Century Europe. I had an old (45 years!) paperback version that fell apart when I re-read it recently. Was very pleased to find a hardcover, used edition to replace it in my library.

Holy Four Alarm Fire Batman!
I think I just read the hottest thing to creep onto my eReader in a good while. And believe me, I've read some yummy little tales lately. Make Me absolutely knocked my socks off. *I could totally segue that last statement into a lewd comment but I'll keep my inner 16 year old at bay ;)*

Tyler's character is so delightfully filthy with his words. Mix that with Brandon's sweet disposition and it's just a firework ready to go off.
Maisie is a lucky lady.

I, personally, would qualify this is erotic romance, because there is a relationship that reaches beyond sex. I know others might disagree and mark it as strictly erotica due to the sexual content (F/M,M/M, M/M/F) and frequency of such scenes. But whatever you want to classify Make Me under I don't care, because it was hot and made my day/night and probably tomorrow :)

Charlotte Stein has just redefined "hot" for me. Again. I beg her to never, ever write scat. Ever.

As with all other books I've read by Ms. Stein, I loved the language, the characters, the story. I've never met these people on the pages of someone else's book. The world, the tone, the dynamic... all unique -- the kind of unique I've found to be a hallmark of Ms. Stein's work.

If you consider yourself open-minded, I'd recommend this book to you. If you want more of the sort of stories you've grown comfortable with, you're in the wrong place.

In a romance world full of alphas, Charlotte writes just for me, it seems. Everyone seems to want a big tough alpha these days, but give me a hottie that likes to be bossed around a bit, and I go weak in the knees! All her characters: tops, bottoms, and a little bit of both, have true emotions and depth. Love love love.

There is, however, a striking diversity and lack of consensus regarding the classification of the trilogy within the existing genre forms of the detective novel. Among others, Auster's stories are described as: "metaanti-detective-fiction;" "mysteries about mysteries;" a "strangely humorous working of the detective novel;" "very soft-boiled;" a "metamystery;" "glassy little jigsaws;" a "mixture between the detective story and the nouveau roman;" a "metaphysical detective story;" a "deconstruction of the detective novel;" "antidetective-fiction;" "a late example of the anti-detective genre;" and being related to 'hard-boiled' novels by authors like Hammett and Chandler." Such a striking lack of agreement within the secondary literature has inspired me to write this paper. It does not, however, elaborate further an this diversity of viewpoints although they all seem to have a certain validity and underline the richness and diversity of Auster's detective trilogy; neither do I intend to coin a new term for Auster's detective fiction. I would rather place The New York Trilogy within a more general and open literary form, namely postmodern detective fiction. This classifies Paul Auster as an American writer who is part of the generation that immediately followed the 'classical literary movement' of American postmodernism' of the 60s and 70s. His writing demonstrates that he has been influenced by the revolutionary and innovative postmodern concepts, characterised by the notion of 'anything goes an a planet of multiplicity' as well as by French poststructuralism. About the Author

Anders Dahlvig is the former president and CEO of IKEA. In 2006, he received the U.S. Foreign Policy Association’s Global Social Responsibility Award, and in 2009 he earned the Oslo Business for Peace Award. Dahlvig is a regular keynote speaker at international conferences, such as GDI International Conference on Retailing, UN Global Compact Summit, IVL Swedish Environmental Research Institute, Greenpeace Annual Conference, ECR Europe, and World Retail Congress.

Good Resource for Business and Mgmt Students

The Ikea Edge was written by former CEO Anders Dahlvig who spent 26 years with the company. The last ten years, from 1999 to 2009, as its leader. The reason he decided to write this book was to reinforce his belief that the success of the company was their adherence to traditional business goals while also stressing the importance of social and environmental responsibility.

While Dahlvig shares personal experiences of his time at Ikea, he also lays out a roadmap for other companies who are interested in learning from his experience. After all, Ikea continued to grow and thrive while many companies around the world were going out of business.

Reading this book and following key ideas will help guide business leaders and the heads of companies who want to replicate the success of Ikea. This is a must read book for students who are attending classes in business management and marketing, or anyone who wants to learn how to become a better leader, business owner, or CEO.

Responsible Capitalism

Dahlvig describes history and "inner workings" of IKEA to make a more general point about responsible capitalism. There is a clear tension between a capitalism driven solely by profit maximization (where profit is the ultimate goal) and a capitalism driven by social ambitions (where profit is a necessary means). Dahlvig believes that companies can be successful while advancing the social good, and offers IKEA as a living proof. The success does not come in spite of it's social ambitions, but because of them. They give the solid long-term reference that makes that company connect successfully with the whole range of stakeholders (employers, customers, local governments, ...).

The picture painted is fairly rosy, and I have done no work to verify the claims made. The book is easy to read and non technical, but still offers some interesting insights about how a successful global retailer is run.

(note: I bought this book because I heard Dahlvig's talk at the London School of Economis - LSE - and found it inspiring. Look it up on the web. He's more convincing and passionate "live" than on paper)

Good, steady, informative read. Honest with a careful style to avoid any potential conflicts, but as a result not revelatory, deliberately, or inspiring. Still if you can be that successful in this way there's hope for us all.
