... when I was growing up and learned to sew like most American girls

This book took me back to a simpler time in America when I was growing up and learned to sew like most American girls, but these lessons skipped a generation and now very few know how to create their own garments and accessories for personal wear or for their homes. But this is not a lost art in most other countries. This book is a terrific guide for anyone who wishes to learn or to teach their children how to sew and have the rewards of creating and the pride of finishing something themselves. The projects in the book are pictured with very simple to understand and complete instructions and many patterns are included, which can be adapted to all sizes and to create many items. This book gives good know-how and experience for anyone from first stitches to creating personalized projects for very nice and practical gifts. The book would be an excellent home-school text also. I love it!

Love It!

I LOVE this book! She is wonderful at explaining sewing terms and processes. The projects range from Beginner-Easy Peasy (1 star) to Improvers-More Tricky (4 stars) from a cushion cover to a customized dress. These are all projects that I would enjoy making, which is not always the case with sewing books like this. The beginners section even has an easy quilt and a mini-bow belt! So happy with this purchase, I would highly recommend it!

Instructions are really easy to understand

At first I was disappointed with this cause it was aimed at beginners, but then I had to put a zipper in a dress, something I should have learned years ago, but realized I've been avoiding zippers with a passion because the ones I tried so long ago didn't go well. I turned to the zipper section and followed every step religiously, even though some of them seemed like they were overkill (that's how I screw up most of the time, taking short cuts), and do you know? I put in the perfect zipper. It looks amazing. I then thought I should send Lauren a thank you note. Ha ha. I love the "Have it your way" dress and now that I've got past the "I sew too well to use this book" thing, I appreciate the amazingly clear instructions. I am a self taught sewer, and didn't realize that I was kinda lacking in some of the basics (like zippers), but now I have no fear. I think if you are really experienced, you won't find much here. But then, it is named LEARN TO SEW with Lauren, isn't it? I loved her on the Great British Sewing Bee, it's why I bought the book! And when I read the text, I hear it in her voice. When I can find the frame, I am going to try the snap frame purse.

This book is really awesome, the only thing I wish you had a little more on funding because entrepreneurs,do need funding and where to get because banks don't usually give business money if your a startup but everything in this book is excellent and well written!

Lessons for Anyone....and All Ages

Ryan Blair writes from the heart about his life and his business, including being extremely open about his private life highs and lows. Even though Ryan is an extremely successful businessman, the challenges he has faced are easily recognized by anyone. His love of family and his drive to be his best are qualities that stand out, and he describes in detail how those qualities helped to take him from rock bottom to success....over and over again. This is a book that I would recommend for young adults who are just beginning to identify their strengths, desires and lifelong goals. Ryan shows you how important it is to take responsibility for yourself, for your time, and for your work ethic. "When you're at the bottom, you have to quit digging. You have to have tough conversations with yourself and learn to fight your way out of your own holes." Love it!!!

While Dragon mama takes a nap, one of her five eggs rolls out of the nest, out of the cave, down the hill, along the road, past a castle, and through a town. It is chased by a shepherd, a dog, and many townspeople, including a knight on horseback––until it finally plunges off a cliff and cracks open. When a small, purple, fire-spitting dragon pops out, the chase begins in reverse, with everyone running from the small flying creature, who wants only to return to its cozy cave, its mama, and four newly hatched siblings. The minimal text, just one short line per page, leaves lots of space for the bright, lively pictures to fill in the exciting details of adventure and the coming home. Rochman, Hazel

Curtis Mayfield was one of the seminal vocalists and most talented guitarists of his era. "People Get Ready" is the black anthem of the 1960s, and on his soundtrack to the 1972 movie Super Fly, rather than glorifying the blaxploitation imagery of the film, Mayfield wrote and sang one of the most incisive audio portraits of black America on record.

In Traveling Soul, Todd Mayfield tells his famously private father’s story in riveting detail. Born into dire poverty, raised in the slums of Chicago, Curtis became a musical prodigy, not only singing like a dream but also growing into a brilliant songwriter. In the 1960s he became a pioneer, opening his own label and production company and working with many other top artists, including the Staple Singers. Curtis’s life was famously cut short by an accident that left him paralyzed, but in his declining health he received the long-awaited recognition of the music industry.

Todd Mayfield is Curtis Mayfield’s second-oldest son. He is an entrepreneur and former financial services executive in Chicago, and promotes his father’s music and legacy. Travis Atria has written extensively on music and culture for Paste, Wax Poetics, Guitarist, the Believer, and other publications. His music has been featured on MTV, GQ.com, and an independent film that debuted at SXSW. He lives in Gainesville, Florida.

Great read. First book I ever read on Curtis and it's a very interesting one. It's full of inside information that only a person on the inside could provide like the Hendrix book by his brother. Like the Hendrix book, I couldn't put this one down and stayed up late one night to read to the halfway point of the book.

An Excellent Read

I really didn't listen to much of Curtis Mayfield when I was young until the movie, "Superfly," came out. I went to see it in Boston with my then boyfriend. We were so in love with the music we went right out and bought the album and played it until the grooves wore out. When I saw the Curtis Mayfield biography, I instantly was moved to read it. I remember hearing about how tragically his life changed and wanted to know more about him. I also wanted to know how one creative soul could write so much amazing music and be a source of inspiration to so many musicians and listeners. I was hooked by the end of the first chapter. The writer not only tells the story of a man who came from dire poverty, made a tremendous success of himself, but also gives the reader a lesson in the Civil Rights Movement and how so many, especially Curtis Mayfield, with his uplifting lyrics and music, positively affected Martin Luther King's peaceful movement. The last few chapters moved me to tears. They describe how a strong gust of wind changed Curtis' life forever, but never stopped him from making music. Read the book. You won't be disappointed.

About the Author

E.S. Savas is professor of public affairs at Baruch College. He received BA and BS degress from the University of Chicago, a PhD from Columbia University, and an honorary doctorate from the University of Piraeus (Greece). An internationally known pioneer in and authority on privatization, he is the author of numerous books and articles; his books have been published in 21 foreign editions. Savas served as first deputy city administrator of New York and was appointed by President Ronald Reagan as assistant secretary of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. He also held elected office as a member of the borough council of Tenafly, New Jersey. He was professor of public management at Columbia University's Graduate School of Business and taught in the Department of Management, School of Business, Baruch College, where he also served for eight years as chairman.

Argument for Privatization

E.S. Savas makes it clear from the beginning that he's a strong supporter of privatization. Throughout his 40 year career he has petitioned city, state, and local governments to shift more towards the private sector. For Savas, if it is unclear a government service is more efficient than the private sector it should be privatized.

Savas' analysis of privatization is mostly correct. Strong evidence exists that privatization cuts municipal costs and increases the quality of service to consumers. Privatization tends to be more successful with "hard" services, like trash collection, that can be easily contracted and monitored. "Soft" services, like mental health, are difficult to privatize. Almost all cities are happy with the overall results of privatization.

The problem is that Savas doesn't attempt to be objective. The entire book is one long diatribe for privatization. The words "Failures" and "Lessons" are rather deceptive. Reading the title it seems that Savas is making an analysis of privatization and trying to pinpoint where privatization doesn't work. That's not Savas' intent. Savas never claims privatization failed because of market failures. Every time privatization has failed, according to Savas, it's because of short sighted bureaucrats and labor unions. Therefore his "lessons" are how to circumvent public resistant to privatization (p.190 is especially alarming.)

Somewhat strangely Rudolph Giuliani is continual promoted throughout the book. Savas' praise borders on ridiculous at certain points. At times it is difficult for the reader to understand if this is an academic book looking at municipal privatization or a campaign book for Rudolph Giuliani.

Any potential reader should beware that Savas makes no attempt to be impartial. Other books cover the theory and empirical evidence of privatization far superior to Savas' polemic. For anyone looking for an explanation of municipal privatization I suggest Jeffrey Greene's "Cities and Privatization."

Hideyuki Kikuchi's third book takes manga form through the skilled hands of artist Saiko Takaki. She takes the reader to the thirteenth millenia, where every human lives in fear of vampires. It is a land of sorcery, science and universal use of black eyeliner.

Not to give too much away to those new to VHD, this manga's story is about a human girl that falls in love with a Noble (a.k.a. vampire) anyway, D gets hired to kill Mr. Pointy Teeth and the story goes from there. Throw is some rival hunters... including someone to fill the 'hot-yet-troubled-chick' archetype that is present in all of Kikuchi's work. Be sure to see a number of mutant villains to spice everything up.

The borderline porno sexuality is greatly reduced in this volume. Also the stern character of D is accuratley portrayed. However, as is to be expected from the medium used to portray the story, no inner conflict is perceptable behind the icy exterior of D.

All in all i give it five stars because amazon will not allow 4.5. it misses a perfect 5 because all of the faces look very similar, including in relation to the past two volumes, to each other.
