Charles Derry masterfully explaines the various genres of suspense and thrillers in a clear, clean cut book that will open your eyes to the true mystery of mysterys, and the suspense thriller.

Blade lives

Blade is an ultra rarity in the comic world. The only time he's ever really worked in comics is when Marv Wolfman created him in the 70's for the original Tomb of Dracula, yet the character has translated to a trilogy of films (ranging from excellent to average) with Wesley Snipes in the title role, and since then, a number of new Blade comics have been started; all of which winding up getting cancelled. Things appear to be different this time around, with promising screenwriter Marc Guggenheim (Wolverine) at the helm and Howard Chaykin (American Century, Bite Club) providing the artwork. Make no mistake that there's nothing bad at all about this new take on Blade, which finds the seemingly invincible vampire hunter doing what he does best, while flashbacks to his past are shown intermediately as well. As a whole, Guggenheim's story works, but the breakneck pace of his storytelling makes it easy to get lost in the action. There's appearances from Spider-Man, Dr. Doom, Wolverine, Morbius the Living Vampire, and even Dracula himself to boot as Blade runs afoul of vamps, body jumping demons, and even S.H.I.E.L.D. as well in the midst of the Civil War. Howard Chaykin's artwork however is the definite lowpoint of Undead Again, as the veteran writer/artist appears to be on somewhat of a downward slide, but hopefully, this isn't the case considering the body of work he has under his belt. All in all, there's nothing really special about this first TPB of the new Blade series, but considering what's come before it, this new take is quite refreshing.

Best Blade in years

I've read several different incarnations of Blade from the early 90's onward, and this series is by far the best. It combines the best aspects of the Blade character from the earlier comics with the best aspects from Wesley Snipes' screen portrayal to create the ultimate Blade. The storyline and dialogue are great, and there's plenty of suckhead killing action to satisfy fans of the films. I love the artwork as well, just be warned that the cover art looks completely different from the art inside, although both are awesome. I highly recommend buying this and Vol.2 to finish the series. It's a shame it only ran 12 issues. Overall, it's the best Blade in years and a great read.

BLADE the vampire hunter

This is one of the best stories I've read featuring the character Blade, but the action is kind of minimal. I had no idea Blade could be so versatile. He runs afoul of Dr. Doom, Wolverine and Spiderman himself and by the end of it all finds out who his real father is: a ruthless vampire named Cross. A nice sequence featuring Blade's mother giving birth and the now infamous Deacon Frost interrupting the birth to bite his mother.

Very good, but only buy it if you are a blade fan.

About the Author
Santosh K Gupta is Professor of Chemical Engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur, India. A graduate of the same institute, he obtained his PhD from the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, USA, in 1972. His research interests include modelling, optimization and on-line optimal control of polymerization reactors, and modelling and multi-objective optimization (using genetic algorithm) of chemical engineering systems. He has published over 200 papers in these areas, and has also authored/co-authored the textbooks, Fundamentals of Polymer Science and Engineering, Momentum Transfer Operations, Fluid Mechanics and its Applications, Reaction Engineering of Step-Growth Polymerizations, and Mathematical Methods in Chemical and Environmental Engineering. He has been Visiting Professor at the Department of Chemical Engineering, University of Notre Dame, IN, USA (1985-87), National University of Singapore (1998-99), University of Wisconsin, Madison, USA (1999-2000), and IIT Bombay, Mumbai (2008-2010), where he was the L & T Chair Professor of Chemical Engineering. He has received several awards and honours including being the honoree in two festschrift sessions in the Catalysis and Reaction Engineering Division, AIChE Annual Meeting, Minneapolis, 18 Oct 2011, and the honoree in the festschrift issue of the journals Polym. Eng. Sci. (Volume 51, No. 10, 2011).

A terrific little Compilation!

Not only has this book been a fantastic source of beautiful quotes to share with my beloved, reading through it and using some of the letters it contains as a model has helped me express my feelings for her more eloquently.
Well organized and easy to use as a reference book, this handy little volume has love letters written by a large assortment of authors, poets, celebrities, and historical figures from a wide spectrum of time periods. This brilliant selection of letters runs the gamut of the various emotions present in any romantic relationship and is divided into sections which helps in finding letters most applicable to specific situations.
Most anybody will be able to find something that applies to them personally - a nice reminder that it's all been said before, and probably better than you'll ever be able to. I'm sure I'll continue to use this terrific source of inspiration and reflection for many years to come.
-the binding ribbon is really nice for marking special letters - an added bonus!

The Nuances of Love

Today we text message. We post messages on our Facebook or MySpace. We email, instant message, or call our beloved. And although it would be a mistake to judge these modes of communication as being better or worse than the love letter, one cannot help but think, and be awed, that for centuries the only means for two to send words of love was through the letter. Though there is poetry, though there are sonnets, plays, and novels without end expressing romantic love, for some reason the love letter holds a dear precious place in our hearts. Perhaps we remember our first love letter and through that remembrance of times past personalize the experience of reading the letters of another. Perhaps it is the concise passionate intensity of it. So much of one's heart in so short a space. Ink with the passion of one intoxicated by love.

Whatever it may be, we are drawn to it time and again. And in that fascination, Everyman's Library has taken passion of lovers and loved from the past centuries, for us to voyeuristically behold. Choosing to embrace all the nuances of love, rather than a single dimension, E.L. presents humorous love (G.K. I've worked through just about every other double bass drum book out there and, although the exercises were interesting from a coordination/conditioning standpoint, they did not prepare me to actually play double bass drum patterns in a musical context. I was about to write my own book with exercises I'd developed but then found this book. I thank the authors for saving me the trouble! If you're interested in building double bass drum chops and only want to buy one book...this is it.

duh-duh-duh-duh-deesh is the sound of your thundering double bass

This book is a superb, and very structured approach to double bass. It keeps the hand stuff simple (for the most part), so you can focus on your feet. The progression in difficulty of the exercises is well-suited to any double bass new-comer - up until the last couple sections, where it curves upwards exponentially into odd-groupings and some tight, technical, exchanges between the handsies and feetsies, which might leave you scratching your head with the bead of your drumstick.

A word of warning: Double bass precision and speed can't be developed overnight (Really? Thanks for the heads up). Don't rush through the exercises at the beginning of the book. As simple as they may seem, they provide an excellent opportunity to develop chops and stamina (at least with standard 16th notes. The early exercises don't touch on 16th note triplets, which, of course, are awesome, and about as metal as it gets).

Great book to study double bass drums. The only book that I know of that would be more challenging is Virgil Donati's double bass freedom. I own both. Other great books would be D.B. by Joe Franco, double feet by Carmine Appice and double drums by Louis Belson.
