This is a step-by-step guide through Preparation, Arrival and Day-to-Day Life in Italy. I’ve written it as if you have little or no knowledge of Italy, so that I don’t overlook anything or assume that you know what some would call “obvious,” but which may not be obvious at all! I’ve supposed only that you know that Italy is a country shaped like a boot: a land of wine, pasta, and pleasure.

"The difference between shopping in the U.S and shopping in Italia? That difference lies in the purpose. In the U.S., it’s important to get a parking spot as close to the door of the store as possible, to save time. Without employee help or conversation, you grab your item(s) and try your damndest to choose the fastest check-out line, to save time. “Damn! That one was longer, but it’s moving faster! Damn!” Few or no pleasantries are shared between you and the cashier. Hurrying out the door, you applaud yourself for the parking spot you nabbed in the first row, throw your purchases into your car and drive hurriedly home, all the while hoping to get green lights, to save time.
In Italia, the purpose of shopping is social, and you’ve probably arrived on foot. In most traditional mom and pop stores, the owner will wait on you and take all of the time you need, no matter how many new customers have come in the door behind you. Being efficient and tight-lipped are not favorable personal qualities in Italy. Making conversation, making jokes, and showing appreciation and patience are valued."

Recently, I have been thinking to move abroad. I was born and raised in Italy but I have never like it. But while I was searching for some book about moving to U.S, UK or any other place where English is the first language... I came across this book and it changed my entire prospective!. Now, I would never leave Italy, never!. [You have to read this book to know why ^-^ ]

And wow, the author describes Italian people perfectly. Yes, we are loud, we love to eat and stay with our families and friends.
In six words: WE LOVE LIVING LA BELLA VITA. ✔

So if you don't know where to spend an holiday or if you want to change your life MOVE TO ITALY is your book.
Everything is explained clearly and there is also a guide that teaches you how to pronounce many difficult Italian words.

And since I live in Italy I can guarantee you that this book will help you immensely. There's a lot of useful information such as: how to find an house, learn italian language and most importantly how to live in this beautiful country like you were an Italian.

Do you know that doors in Italy open inwards? or that you have to validate your ticket before you get onto train??
If I had to move abroad i would surely like to know all of these small details.

Decided to go to law school and the next LSAT's ...

Decided to go to law school and the next LSAT's were in a month. I only had four weeks to prepare and had been our of school for a 25 years. No test prep classes were available so I decided to try these books. After a few weeks my averages on the practice tests improved to over 160. If you decide to try these just be sure to review your wrong answers.

The Best

These books are the most inexpensive source of real LSATs to study from. In addition, they also contain several sample comparative reading comprehension passages and questions, which were introduced in June 2007. I haven't seen a better source for practice of these types of questions.

Some will say that these tests vary significantly from the more recent tests. While I agree with this statement, the underlying foundation of logic and reasoning is the same.

Simply put, these books are a must-have for any LSAT prep.

Getting technical about non-technical skills

Following the introduction, the book is structured around chapters on 7 'non-technical' (i.e. human factors related) skills. These are: situational awareness, decision making, communications, team working, leadership, managing stress and coping with fatigue. There are then 3 more general chapters on identifying, training and assessing non-technical skills. The examples used are mostly from aviation, offshore and surgery. There are extensive bibliographies after each chapter. While covering some complex subjects the writing style is very accessible.

Labor disputes have produced more violence over a longer period of time in the United States than in any other industrialized country in the world. From the 1890s to the 1930s, hardly a year passed without a serious—and often deadly—clash between workers and management. Written in the 1930s, and with a new introduction by Mike Davis, Dynamite recounts a fascinating and largely forgotten history of class and labor struggle in America’s industrial beginnings.

It is the story of brutal exploitation, massacres, and judicial murders of the workers. It is also the story of their response: when peaceful strikes yielded no results, workers fought back by any means necessary.

Louis Adamic has written the classic story of labor conflict in America, detailing many episodes of labor violence, including the Molly Maguires, the Homestead Strike, Pullman Strike, Colorado Labor Wars, the Los Angeles Times bombing, as well as the case of Sacco and Vanzetti.

Louis Adamic emigrated from Slovenia when he was fifteen years old and quickly joined the American labor force. The author of eleven books, he is now recognized as a great figure in early twentieth-century American literature. He was found shot to death in a burning farmhouse in 1954.

About the Author
Louis Adamic (1898­1951) was one of the best-known ethnic American authors of the twentieth century. His politics, firmly on the left, were always controversial. In circumstances that remain a mystery, in 1951, Adamic was found shot dead in his burning farmhouse in Milford, New Jersey. A former meatcutter and long-distance truck driver, Mike Davis teaches urban theory and was awarded a MacArthur Fellowship. He is the author Buda's Wagon: A Brief History of the Car Bomb and City of Quartz. He lives in San Diego.

The other side of the struggle

As the old saying goes, "Desperate times call for desperate measures," and there are few times more desperate for a majority of laborers living hand-to-mouth, than being put out of work en masse. Adamic's well-researched, but surprisingly easy-to-read (I read it over a long weekend) book demonstrates the desperate side of the labor struggle which is rarely, if ever, taught in classrooms.

As strikes and "riots" are often portrayed in the media as unprovoked violence against the employers or scab workers, and haphazard destruction of the employers' properties, Adamic will not let the reader ignore that in many (most?) cases, it is the the monopolists and the concentrated Big Business who are directly responsible for the opening salvo (i.e., hired thugs to bust the strikes, agents provocateurs, corrupt politicians, etc.). He also notes that while many attempts at labor organizing were demonized and even prosecuted as illegal interference with commerce, etc., the duplicitous nature of the American legal system often ignored equally heinous interference with commerce when done on behalf of organized Big Business.

Adamic is unabashedly anti-capitalist, so his character descriptions tend to favor the champions of labor, and make the enemies of labor seem characteristically repugnant. That said, he keeps a fairly even keel and is not afraid to highlight labors shortcomings, infightings, especially weak leadership, a "We'll get ours and damn the rest" mentality, failures of the AFL as well as the politicking and racketeering scandals which plagued early labor organizations and it would seem, doomed them for the future.

Although he does not explicitly endorse "dynamite" as a means to achieving labor's goals, I think he is without a doubt sympathetic to its use; at least under certain desperate circumstances the majority of which cannot be blamed on the working classes.

The Story of Class Violence in America

Originally published in 1933, and still about the fairest history of class violence in America available. The reality is that the poor and working class have always been on the receiving end of the worst violence in the struggle to survive. Denial remains rife, and still today, many Americans have problems owning up to a "System" that was rigged to the benefit of robber barons and backed by the brute force of unjust laws. To mention just one of countless examples, when miners in the Pennsylvania coal country struck against dangerous conditions, long hours and low pay, they were dragged out of their homes by the State Troopers (aka "the Cossacks") and literally forced back down into the mines as though they were serfs! Not satisfied with frog-marching an entire labor force, these same mounted troopers took to chasing & harassing miners' children attempting to get to and from public schools. It's not a pretty picture of America's past, but it remains a vividly relevant mirror to our present.

While documenting these and other instances of savage exploitation that led to decades of labor strife, Adamic portrays the shortcomings and errors of labor leaders just as unflinchingly. The struggle to organize labor proceeded by misdirected fits and starts and Adamic candycoats nothing. Contrary to one of the other reviews, neither Adamic nor his book can be construed as "unabashedly anticapitalist." Adamic was quite honest about his biases and stated them up front. His sympathies were with labor, but neither did he "habitually pronounce capitalist with a hiss."

In sum, a classic of labor history, of which no serious student of either labor or history should remain ignorant.

Class Based Violence in America...

Capitalism and the labor movement, two great tastes that taste great together. Ever since the end of the cold war the whole labor/capital struggle has been put on the back burner. Pity, that. Is there any story line that more embodies "modern" times and its impact on indivduals?

I could bore you to death with support for my argument, but will just say that I have an active interest in the history of the ameican labor between 1870 and 1918 and leave it that. So much that is interesting about the United States happened during that time, and almost NONE of it had to do with national politics. If you think the study of history requires a focus on national policial events, you know little of history.

I picked up Louis adamic's "Dynamite: the history of class violence in america", after learning about its existence while reading about the history of the Los Angeles Times.

This book specifically examines episodes of violence by organized labor against the owning class. I think recent concern over "terrorism" gives this subject heightened interest. The labor movement were "domestic terrorists" way before the term was in vogue.

This book also points to the fondness for violence that lies in the heart of America. America, always violence. Any doubt that a proposensity for violence is "As american as apple pie?" This is a trait that extends from our gun wielding criminals, to our culture taste, to our justice system all the way on up to our deal old President. And mind you, I'm not saying "good" or "bad" about this particular cultural characterstic- it is just fact.

Dynamite! was originally published in 1933 and then republished in 1968. I found a paperback version of the '68 reprint on amazon. It runs about 420 pages. This length is mitigated by the fact that the writing style is "journalistic" and the format of the narrative is anecodtal (I.e. "the next struggle between capital and labor came in 1908 when miners in Wyoming... Etc). Though the language is a tad dated, the journalistic style keeps eveything moving along quickly. Your reference point should be one of those books that is based on a New Yorker article- Malcolm Gladwell's "The Tipping Point", for one example.

"The Big Fat Kill," Book 3 of Frank Miller's "Sin City" graphic novels once again focuses on the character of Dwight, who got himself a new face and a new attitude in the previous story, "A Dame to Kill For." The latter was the more important part, because Dwight did not come across as being anyway as interesting as Marv, the hero of the first "Sin City" story who is back to lend Dwight a helping hand in the second. Dwight is not exactly alone this time either, but he is certainly more capable of holding his own than previously.

Dwight is spending some time with Shellie the waitress when Jackie Boy shows up with a mean drunk and four of his friends. The old Dwight would have had some problems with that situation, but our hero has definitely grown up. Getting Jackie Boy to leave Shellie alone should be the end of it, but Dwight is convinced that the night will not end until Jackie Boy hurts somebody and Dwight takes the responsibility for making sure that does not happen. But when Jackie Boy ends up to Old Town where the ladies ply their trade of prostitution and are the law, "beautiful and merciless," it looks like Dwight's help is not need at all. This, however, turns out to be the biggest mistake of the night and suddenly Dwight's services are most decidedly needed.

It will seem strange to pick out this particular "Sin City" story and say it is a bit over the top, since obviously all of them are. The ending is certainly brutally efficient but at the cost of any notion of elegance, which is usually preferred in a comic noir story such as this. Miller is certainly not experimenting as much in terms of his artwork as he was in the first novel in the series, but the rough way in which Dwight and Jackie Boy's faces are drawn is not to my liking. The full-page panels in this one have Miller's best artwork. This includes Dwight introducing Jackie Boy to the toilet, Dwight jumping into his car, and some of the ladies of Old Town. Still, all things considered, this ends up being a second tier Miller story and Dwight is still a second tier hero, still well worth the reading but not as good as it gets in "Sin City."

This trade paperback collects together the five issues of the original Dark Horse comic series, along with their covers (which actually introduce some color to Miller's artwork). In the back of the book you will find a Gallery of "Sin City" art contributed by the likes of Arthur Adams, Sergio Aragones, Joe Kumbert, Mike Mignola, John Romita, Walter Simonson, and some other artists who present their interpretations of Nancy Callahan, the ladies of Old Town, and other "Sin City" characters.

The soothing sounds of BRAKA BRAKA BRAK

Third book in the deliciously sinister series created by Frank Miller. If you've ever heard the phrase "They had it coming to them" and agreed, you should definitely read this book. If anything is great of this decidely Noir series is that all heroes in this series make you nod in approval in regards to bloody murder. That's the magic of Frank Miller, he puts situations which are obviously not conforming to society or what we deem as correct and spins it in a light that makes you not only acquiesce but root for hookers and murderers. If that's not talent I don't know what is. So how fat is the Big Fat Kill? Did you see seven, that first guy who was fed to death? Well add another ton or so. This series and this book is not for the weak of heart or stomach. Now if you do have the required like for gore necessary for this series, you will find yet another tale of alluringly torrid happenings in a city that makes Gotham look like a Winter Wonderland. Basin City... Population fluctuates and declines with every book.

The Dark Dwight Returns!

The return of Dwight and the arrival of Miho is a great story. I happened to see the film before I read this so the book was very easy to read, and unfortunately I wish I didn't know the ending. That being said, I'm going to further reccomend reading books before the film adaptation. Book 2 (not included in the film) had a very larger effect on me because I hadn't witnessed the epic story beforehand. Furthermore, this volume is really awesome, and I'm lucky that they made a great adaptation of it, so that I just saw the comic come to life, instead of the comic transform and cut and paste into film.

You won't find much new stuff aside from the film, but you will still enjoy seeing the "adventure" on panels. I suggest reading it after not seeing the film for awhile, that way you won't be speaking dialogue before its read. So far I've liked book 2 the best, but 1 & 3 are about equal in value.
